A trip to bid farewell to a beloved student leader has turned into another tragedy after a bus carrying mourners was involved in a fatal road accident in Kisumu county.
Several university students are feared dead following the crash along the Awasi-Ahero highway in the Nyando area on Friday, August 7.
The students were travelling from Mombasa to attend the burial of former Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) student leader Elvis Otieno, popularly known as “Beast”, whose funeral is set for Saturday, August 8.
Otieno passed away on July 20, leaving the TUM community and student leaders across the country mourning his death.
Two deaths confirmed
Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir confirmed the accident, saying the bus lost control while travelling through Nyando.
He said two people had been confirmed dead, while several others suffered injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
"Regrettably, we have so far received confirmation of two fatalities. A number of passengers sustained injuries, and ambulances have evacuated some of the injured to nearby medical facilities for assessment and treatment," Nassir said.
Rescue efforts remained underway as authorities continued accounting for all those who were on board, with fears that the number of casualties could increase.
Authorities appeal for calm
Nassir said the Mombasa county government was coordinating with Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, security agencies and emergency responders to ensure the injured received the necessary medical care.
He also appealed to members of the public, particularly the Technical University of Mombasa fraternity, to avoid spreading unverified reports as investigations and identification of victims continue.
