Amisi Reveals What Is Holding Up Linda Mwananchi Party Registration

tSaboti MP Caleb Amisi has called on supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement to remain patient as the registration of their political party moves through official statutory channels, pointing out that the process must strictly comply with current legal procedures.

Appearing on NTV Kenya on Monday, Amisi noted that party registration mechanics have shifted under the modern legal framework, meaning applications cannot proceed in the same manner as previous political eras.

He revealed that the name Linda Mwananchi was already reserved two years ago, preventing any new political organization from simply claiming or registering under the identical name or abbreviation.

“That name, Linda Mwananchi, was already reserved two years ago,” Amisi said.

Amisi explained that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties operates under statutory constraints prohibiting the approval of two separate entities with identical or conflicting names and abbreviations. He urged stakeholders behind the movement to view the ongoing timelines as standard legal procedure rather than state interference.

“It is a law. It is a law. If there is another reserved name already, you do not have to register two similar parties with the same abbreviation,” he said.

Amisi Draws on His Own Party’s Registration Battle

Drawing from his direct experience launching the People’s Renaissance Movement (PM), Amisi shared that his group encountered similar hurdles when attempting to secure their preferred acronym. He noted that the abbreviation PRM was already reserved when his team initiated registration, forcing them to adjust and adopt PM instead.

“By the time we were reserving PM, it was because PRM was already taken,” he said.

Amisi pointed out that although the political faction that reserved PRM never finalized full registration, the reservation persisted within the official database.

“It is there in the system. It was reserved even before PM came in,” Amisi said.

He revealed that establishing the People’s Renaissance Movement required approximately 18 months, illustrating the extended timeline required to formalize a political entity under existing administrative requirements.

“The People’s Renaissance Movement has taken one and a half years,” he said.

Amisi recalled that his party’s registration process began prior to the passing of former ODM leader Raila Odinga, driven by a coalition of youth seeking an organized platform to drive political change.

“They are young people who came together, and they decided that we need change and we need it through political parties. They registered that party; they reserved it,” he said.

He reiterated that party registration remains a legal, administrative procedure governed by set statutory requirements, cautioning supporters against expecting instantaneous outcomes.
