Kenyan audiences are increasingly getting a glimpse into Chinese culture and society through a growing number of Chinese television dramas and documentaries being aired on local television stations.
The move comes amid deepening cultural exchanges between Kenya and China, with local broadcasters embracing international content aimed at broadening viewers’ understanding of different cultures and lifestyles.
Local entertainment channels ST Rembo, Bliss TV and PPP TV have recently introduced a selection of Chinese productions translated and dubbed into local languages, making them more accessible to Kenyan audiences.

Among the featured productions is the television drama Maisha ya Familia za Kawaida, which explores themes of marriage, family relationships and personal growth through the experiences of three generations of women in an ordinary household. The series highlights the challenges and triumphs of family life while emphasizing the importance of support and resilience.
Also making its way to local screens is the short drama Mchezo wa Mauaji, a suspense-filled story centred around a mysterious murder and four mahjong players whose hidden connections to the victim gradually come to light during a tense game.

In the documentary category, viewers have been introduced to Mmiliki wa Bwawa la Siku za Baadaye, which follows the journey of a young African student studying aquaculture technology in China and learning about environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Another documentary, Kitambulisho Changu ni ‘Africa China Link’, explores the growing social and cultural ties between Africa and China, highlighting the experiences of individuals helping to strengthen relations between the two regions.
Media stakeholders say the introduction of such content not only provides entertainment but also serves as a platform for cultural exchange, helping audiences gain a better understanding of China’s traditions, values and development journey.
The initiative reflects a broader trend of international collaboration in the film and television industry, with Kenya also seeking opportunities to showcase its own stories and creative productions to global audiences.
