“Country Above Self”: Opposition Leaders Pledge Unity Against Ruto
Kenya’s major opposition leaders took a decisive step toward consolidating their forces for the 2027 General Election by signing a landmark unity pact binding them to support a single presidential candidate against President William Ruto.
The coalition principals under the United Alternative Government movement gathered at the Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County on Monday, 24 August 2026. During the high-stakes meeting, the leaders executed a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement aimed at averting internal splits ahead of the high-stakes 2027 race.
In a joint statement released after the session, the opposition figures framed the accord as a historic commitment to place national interests above individual ambitions and party affiliations.
“We, the Principals of the United Alternative Government, meeting at Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County, have today taken a decisive step towards consolidating our unity and presenting the people of Kenya with a credible, democratic and transformative alternative government,” the statement read.
The principals further detailed their shared commitment to a single, unified ticket: “After extensive and candid consultations, we have unanimously agreed to execute a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement, through which each Principal commits individually and collectively to remain united, participate in a credible process of selecting our presidential candidate, and thereafter fully support and campaign for the candidate chosen to carry our common mandate into the 2027 General Election.”
The agreement directly targets widespread public skepticism over whether the opposition can maintain cohesion amid lingering speculation about who will secure the top ticket. By establishing a transparent framework for candidate selection, the principals intend to resolve competing ambitions before they fracture the movement. The leaders noted that intense public pressure driven by economic hardship inspired their decision to formalize the alliance.
“We recognise that millions of Kenyans are looking beyond individual leaders and political parties. They are asking whether those seeking to provide alternative leadership have the courage to put aside personal ambitions, historical differences and partisan considerations in defence of the greater national interest,” they stated.
Under the signed Personal Unity Pledge, each leader promises to respect collective choices, fully participate in the presidential nomination process, and channel both political backing and resources toward the chosen flag bearer.
Simultaneously, the Coalition Unity Agreement binds the principals to refrain from undermining the eventual nominee, sponsoring rival candidacies, or taking any action that could fracture the alliance.
Acknowledging that true cohesion requires discipline, the leaders acknowledged the sacrifices ahead.
“This is therefore more than a political understanding among leaders. It is a covenant with the people of Kenya. We have chosen to walk it together,” the statement continued, concluding with their operational motto: “Country above self. Unity above division. Service above power. That is our pledge to one another. More importantly, that is our covenant with the people of Kenya.”
The meeting brought together key political figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Fred Matiang’i, Justin Muturi, Eugene Wamalwa, Peter Munya, Lenny Kivuti, and Omingo Magara. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was represented by Cleophas Malala, who signed the accord on his behalf.
