DCI Opens Detailed Investigation into Fatal Crash That Killed Cyrus Jirongo

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a detailed probe into the road accident that claimed the life of former Cabinet minister and ex-Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo.

In a statement issued on Monday, the DCI said the crash occurred in the early hours of December 13, 2025, at Karai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway in Naivasha. The incident involved a vehicle driven by Jirongo and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus belonging to Climax Company Ltd.

According to preliminary investigations, the accident happened at about 2:19am and involved motor vehicle KCZ 305U and PSV bus KCU 576A. The collision was head-on, with the impact forcing Jirongo’s car approximately 25 metres from the point of impact, while the bus came to rest about 50 metres away.

Following the crash, the DCI deployed a multi-agency team comprising homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory. The team visited the scene, carried out initial examinations, and secured crucial exhibits to support ongoing investigations.

Investigators also recovered CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station near the accident scene. The footage provides a detailed timeline of Jirongo’s final movements moments before the collision.

According to the footage, Jirongo drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction at 2:18:40am but did not refuel. At 2:19:10am, his vehicle briefly stopped at the exit before making a right turn back towards Nairobi at 2:19:19am. Seconds later, at 2:19:25am, the PSV bus was captured colliding with his vehicle.

The driver of the bus, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has since been questioned by detectives and released on cash bail as investigations continue into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving. He is expected to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025.

Statements have also been recorded from the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant who were on duty at the time, as well as from other potential witnesses. Further statements are expected from passengers who were aboard the bus.

The DCI said forensic teams will revisit the scene for additional analysis, while detectives are retracing Jirongo’s movements earlier that night, including individuals he interacted with at a meeting in Nairobi.

Once investigations are concluded, a comprehensive file will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal review and guidance.

The Directorate conveyed its condolences to Jirongo’s family and assured the public that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly, impartially, and in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law.
