The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured the conviction of Ibrahim Hussein Hassan on seven terrorism offences under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.
Hassan was convicted at the Kahawa Law Courts after the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that he was a member of Al-Shabaab terrorist group and was involved in activities linked to terrorism.
Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage found that Hassan was a member of Al-Shabaab on 6 September 2022, when he was arrested in Eastleigh Section III, Nairobi County. The group is listed as a terrorist organisation under Kenya Gazette Notice No. 2326 of 7 April 2015.
The court convicted Hassan on three counts of collecting information connected with terrorism and three counts of possessing articles linked to the commission of terrorist acts.
Evidence presented before the court included a forensic examination of a Samsung mobile phone recovered from Hassan. The analysis revealed three videos containing radical extremist terrorist propaganda, which the court said could be used to recruit, train and radicalise young people.
The prosecution, led by Principal Prosecution Counsel Kennedy Amwayi and assisted by Prosecution Counsel Fatuma Ahmed, called 10 witnesses during the trial.
The conviction followed trial proceedings.
Hassan will appear before the court for mitigation and sentencing on 29 July 2026.
