Former Embakasi West Member of Parliament George Theuri has drawn widespread public attention after venturing into charcoal vending following his defeat in the 2022 General Election.
Theuri, who served two consecutive terms between 2013 and 2022, lost his parliamentary seat to Mark Mwenje.
Since exiting elective office, the former legislator has taken a markedly different path, embracing small-scale entrepreneurship and openly documenting his new hustle on social media.

In several posts, he is seen selling charcoal to local residents, a move that has sparked both admiration and debate among Kenyans online.

In one of his updates, Theuri expressed gratitude to supporters who have helped promote his business. “Asanteni sana kwa kupromote hii hustle ya makaa. God awabless sana,” he wrote, thanking well-wishers for encouraging his new venture.

His posts have triggered a wave of reactions across social media platforms. Many users praised him for choosing honest work rather than lamenting his political loss.

James Munene remarked that the former MP had not yet settled into a comfort zone, adding that Theuri’s decision demonstrated the importance of “kujituma,” or hard work, regardless of one’s past status.
Others viewed the move as a powerful lesson in self-reliance. Leonard Mumah commented that Theuri was sending a strong message to Kenyans about the need to seek livelihoods beyond political office, noting that leadership positions should not be seen as lifetime guarantees.

The story also attracted humour and curiosity. Zoza Zoza jokingly asked, “Gunia moja jameni mangapi my guy?” while Phelix Kobonyo quipped, “Sijaona wamama wakinunua makaa,” questioning whether women were buying the charcoal.
Despite the light-hearted banter, many Kenyans saw Theuri’s transition as a positive example of dignity in labour and resilience after politics.

His experience has reignited debate on life after elective leadership and underscored the importance of planning for sustainable livelihoods once political careers come to an end.
