Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya appeared to set aside their recent political differences after meeting at the Twine Cietu Meru cultural festival in Nairobi.
The two leaders shared a light moment at the event on Saturday night, laughing together and dancing side by side as they joined other guests in celebrating Ameru culture.
The festival was held at Scilla Garden, Sportsview, Kasarani, bringing together members of the Meru community for music, dance and cultural celebrations.
Their public show of unity comes after days of political disagreements within the Mt Kenya opposition camp.
Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has been pushing for greater political unity in the region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Munya, who leads the Party of National Unity (PNU), has previously opposed calls for smaller Mt Kenya parties to dissolve and join Gachagua’s party.
The differences had raised questions over whether the region’s political leaders could agree on a common political vehicle ahead of 2027.
But on Saturday, the two appeared comfortable in each other’s company.
Gachagua later appeared to reinforce the unity message in a social media post.
“The Mountain is ONE! Nobody can get between us!” he said.
The message comes at a time when political leaders are increasingly positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 election.
For Gachagua, keeping the Mt Kenya vote united remains a key part of his political strategy as he seeks to strengthen DCP’s influence in the region.
Munya, meanwhile, remains an important political voice in Mt Kenya East and has his own political interests in the region.
The meeting therefore carried significance beyond the cultural event.
It offered a public picture of two leaders who had recently been caught up in political disagreements now sharing a platform, dancing and sending a message of unity.
However, it remains too early to tell whether the warm encounter marks a lasting political agreement between Gachagua and Munya.
For now, their appearance at the festival has provided a striking image of unity at a time when the politics of Mt Kenya is being shaped by party competition, leadership differences and the search for a common strategy ahead of 2027.
