Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua took direct aim at President William Ruto, demanding that he stop using former President Uhuru Kenyatta as an excuse to cover up his administration’s shortcomings.
In a scathing statement issued on Wednesday, Gachagua accused President Ruto of consistently blaming Uhuru Kenyatta whenever his competence and governance record come under intense public criticism.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta is not your opponent in this election. You are just trying a bad deflection. Poor tactic, Mr. Ruto, but we know you very well,” Gachagua stated.
The former Deputy President asserted that Ruto is rapidly proving unfit for office and called on Kenyans to vote him out in the 2027 General Election.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta did not sufficiently convince me and a majority of Kenyans that you were incapable of leading the country, that you were viciously corrupt, and that you would completely ruin our country in less than three years,” Gachagua remarked.
“Today, you have proven to me and the whole country that President Uhuru was right. Based on that, he has no further role in convincing us that we must get rid of you on 10th August 2027 at the ballot.”
Sparked by Siaya Campaign Remarks
Gachagua’s fiery pushback follows comments President Ruto made on Tuesday during a campaign stop in Siaya County, where the Head of State lambasted Kenyatta for continuing to engage in active opposition politics rather than assuming an elder statesman role.
Ruto claimed Kenyatta had disgraced the presidency and was actively funding opposition movements to destabilize the government, a statement that came after a High Court ruling directed Kenyatta to vacate his leadership role in the Jubilee Party.
“Mimi nashangaa, mtu ambaye amekuwa Rais wa Kenya, unaacha kiti ya Rais, badala ya kwenda kuwa statesman, unaenda kuwa rebel leader, kiongozi wa upinzani. Mpaka saa hii korti inamwambia atoke,” Ruto told supporters in Siaya.
‘55 Million Kenyans Are Your Opponents’
Responding to those claims, Gachagua urged President Ruto to confront the economic and social issues affecting his government rather than hiding behind his predecessor’s legacy.
“55 million Kenyans are your opponents. Have you ever heard of a President hated even by children? Even the worst dictators do better. Your ranking is on another level,” Gachagua declared.
He outlined a long list of grievances, arguing that Ruto’s true opposition consists of the Kenyan public itself: salaried workers whose payslips have been heavily taxed, Gen Z youth who have faced abductions and state violence, religious communities whose places of worship have been defiled, business owners forced out of enterprise, patients lacking medication or health insurance, and parents and students struggling without affordable education under the soaring cost of living.
Addressing Ruto’s accusations regarding opposition funding, Gachagua warned that political bribery would not work on voters in 2027.
“Be advised that the leaders tasked with the responsibility of removing you from office by Kenyans require no sponsorship. They have clear and sufficient instructions from the people of Kenya,” Gachagua insisted. “This is the first presidential election where money is not a factor. Kenyans are so determined to get rid of you that they don’t require any inducement.”
