How Smugglers Hid Sh22 Million Meth at JKIA Before Detectives Uncovered the Plot

Authorities at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) dealt a blow to international drug trafficking networks on Monday, seizing two separate shipments of methamphetamine worth Sh22 million. The recovery occurred during a routine multi-agency verification exercise at a local cargo shed, involving officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and various airport security stakeholders.
The first major find involved a package transiting from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with its final destination set for the Philippines. Although the shipping manifest declared the contents as “car piston samples,” the physical inspection told a different story. Officers discovered a suspicious whitish crystalline substance stashed inside the mechanical parts.
Preliminary field tests identified the powder as methamphetamine, a highly addictive psychotropic drug. This specific consignment weighed approximately 1,730 grams, carrying an estimated street value of Sh13.84 million.
Shortly after the first seizure, investigators scored a second breakthrough. They intercepted a shipment originating from Juja Sub-County in Kiambu County, which was also destined for the Philippines. This time, traffickers attempted to disguise the narcotics within a collection of handbags.
The ruse fell apart when vigilant officers noticed unusual structural weight in the items. Upon opening the bags, they found secret compartments sewn into the linings of three packages. These false bottoms contained roughly 1,020 grams of clear crystalline methamphetamine, valued at Sh8.16 million.
Heightened Vigilance at Kenya’s Main Gateway
Police have officially seized both consignments and shifted their focus toward identifying the individuals behind the shipments. This double intercept marks a period of intense scrutiny at JKIA, as airport personnel continue to ramp up their efforts to block illegal exports.
This success follows another significant bust just last week. During that operation, the same multi-agency team intercepted 700 grams of cocaine valued at Sh2.8 million. That shipment, which originated in Busia and was headed for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, utilized a particularly deceptive method of concealment: the drugs were hidden inside the covers of four storybooks.
