Huduma Kenya has launched a free WhatsApp mental health counselling service aimed at making professional psychological support more accessible to Kenyans seeking help. The initiative is expected to complement existing mental health services by allowing members of the public to speak with trained telecounsellors through the messaging platform.
The service enables individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges to receive counselling through WhatsApp by contacting 0747 191 919. Huduma Kenya said the platform is intended to provide a convenient and confidential way for people to access professional support, regardless of their location.
In a statement announcing the initiative, Huduma Kenya said the new service is part of its efforts to improve access to mental health care and encourage more Kenyans to seek help when facing emotional or psychological difficulties.
"People seeking mental health assistance can now reach trained telecounsellors through WhatsApp on 0747 191 919. Free counselling and wellness services also remain available through the 1919 helpline," the agency said.
Mental health experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that digital counselling services can help reduce barriers such as stigma, cost, and distance, which often prevent people from accessing professional care. They say the service could particularly benefit young people, who are among the country's most active WhatsApp users.
The launch comes amid growing awareness of mental health issues in Kenya, with government agencies and health organisations continuing to encourage the public to seek professional support whenever they experience emotional distress.
The introduction of the WhatsApp counselling platform is expected to complement the existing 1919 National Mental Health Helpline, which offers free counselling and referral services to individuals in need.
