Kalonzo Sets the Record Straight on Uhuru’s Role in 2027 Battle Against Ruto

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has denied reports claiming that retired President Uhuru Kenyatta will lead opposition efforts to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at ACK Cathedral in Embu, Kalonzo said opposition leaders are charting their own strategies and warned against framing Uhuru as the person driving any campaign against Ruto.

“Nobody Will Do It for Us,” Kalonzo Says

“So do not paint a picture that Uhuru is organizing us to face Ruto. We are organizing ourselves to face Ruto, and nobody will do it for us,” Kalonzo said.

The Wiper leader said the meeting Uhuru convened on Monday, in his capacity as chair of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Council, will focus on strengthening the coalition rather than plotting against Ruto.

“The meeting Uhuru chairs on Monday is just about moving Azimio forward and not arranging how to tackle Ruto,” he said.

Kalonzo said the public should judge Uhuru’s involvement in Azimio through his role as council chair, not as the architect of opposition political strategy.

“Uhuru is a retired president, but he is also the council chair of Azimio la Umoja. I am the party leader of Azimio,” he said.

He added: “Do not make Ruto panic that Uhuru is plotting against him. He is just there to make sure Azimio as a political organization moves to the next level and brings everybody on board.”

Media reports have linked Uhuru’s expected role in the Azimio meeting to plans to reorganize the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections, with speculation that the coalition aims to build a stronger political force against Ruto’s administration.

Kalonzo, however, said opposition leaders remain responsible for their own political planning.

“Uhuru is not organizing us. We are doing it ourselves,” he said.
