Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has opposed Siaya Governor James Orengo’s presidential bid, saying it could spoil President William Ruto’s votes in the Nyanza region.
Kaluma said Orengo was unlikely to get substantial votes in the 2027 presidential race, arguing that the majority of the Luo community had already decided to support Ruto.
Speaking during a voter registration drive in Homa Bay Town, Kaluma directly told Orengo that he would not get enough votes to become president.
“I tell Orengo that we have decided as a community to support Ruto. You will not get substantial votes to become the president of this country,” Kaluma said.
The MP accused Orengo of going against the position taken by the Luo community.
He said Orengo had previously attempted to run for president but failed to succeed.
“Orengo had attempted to go against the community by running for the presidency some years ago, but he did not succeed. We welcome him to campaign in our county, but he should come in peace,” Kaluma said.
Orengo announced on Friday that he would be on the ballot in the 2027 General Election.
The Siaya governor made the announcement during the burial of politician Newton Ogada’s son in Kasipul Constituency.
His declaration has since sparked fresh political debate in Nyanza, with Kaluma insisting that the region had made its choice.
The two leaders are on opposing sides of the political divide that has emerged in the region, with Orengo leading the Linda Mwananchi faction while Kaluma supports the ODM leadership under Oburu Oginga.
Kaluma also cast doubt on the ability of the Linda Mwananchi leaders to produce the next president.
“You have people saying they want to be president, but they have not even organised themselves to lead a party or movement,” he said.
