KCB Foundation launches Circular Economy Initiative for SMEs

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 13 – KCB Foundation has partnered with Hivos, Kenya Private Sector Alliance, Somo and United States International University-Africa to launch the European Union-funded “Tujenge Pamoja” initiative aimed at accelerating Kenya’s transition to a circular green economy.
The initiative, implemented under the EU SWITCH Africa Green Programme, seeks to move Kenya away from the traditional “take-make-dispose” economic model to a circular economy focused on repair, reuse, recycling and efficient use of resources.
Under the programme, 3,200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) will be supported to adopt sustainable and commercially viable circular business models.
The initiative will also strengthen 40 Business Support Organizations (BSOs) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to serve as innovation and enterprise development hubs across the country.
Speaking during the launch in Nairobi, Mendi Njonjo said the programme is aimed at boosting economic resilience and creating opportunities for small businesses.
“By empowering small businesses with green financing, innovation and skills, we are building enterprises that can compete, create jobs and drive Kenya’s transition to a more inclusive and circular economy,” she said.
The programme also seeks to create green jobs for women and youth, reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions, and improve access to green financing through catalytic funding mechanisms.
Henriette Geiger said the transition to a circular economy presents a major economic opportunity for Kenya.
“Through ‘Tujenge Pamoja’, we are strengthening innovation, supporting MSMEs, creating green jobs and promoting inclusive growth that leaves no one behind,” she said.
The initiative will prioritize women-led, youth-led and marginalized enterprises as part of its focus on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI).
