The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has started preparations to clear the way for the upgrade of the Nanyuki-Naibor Turnoff-Doldol road, with utility relocation and roadside structures among the issues being addressed before major works progress.
The authority is working with local leaders, government agencies and technical teams to identify infrastructure that could be affected by the Ksh5.5 billion project.
The preparations include plans to relocate water lines, electricity poles and fibre-optic cables along the road corridor.
KeNHA is also looking at roadside structures and encroachments within the project area as it prepares for construction.
The authority said the discussions are aimed at ensuring the affected utilities and structures are dealt with in an organised manner and do not interfere with the road works.
Resident Engineer Howard M’mayi said continued discussions with residents and other agencies would be important as the project moves forward.
KeNHA also plans to hold public participation meetings in Nanyuki Municipality and at Jua Kali Centre. The meetings will give residents more information about the project and allow them to raise issues concerning the construction.
What the project will involve
The 58km road will be improved to a bitumen road within a 36-month project.
Among other activities, there will be widening, improvement of shoulders and pedestrian ways and improvement of those sections that have been already tarred between Nanyuki and the Naibor turnoff.
As part of the improvements, the project will be equipped with a virtual weighbridge which would assist to regulate overloading of trucks using the road.
With the completion of the project, the new road will be of assistance to people, livestock and goods movement from the surrounding areas to the market.
It will further assist to improve the access to services in Laikipia North as many of the area’s residents have had problems with the road’s poor state for many years.
The process of improvements may cause some disruptions for businesses and the people living nearby, which means that the involvement of KeNHA in local communities will play an important part in making the process smooth.
Locals have appreciated the long awaited road improvements as it will help with the transportation and businesses operating through the road.
