Kenya and Korea Deepen Digital Cooperation as Kenya-AIST Moves Toward Operationalisation

Kenya is deepening its technology partnership with South Korea as the country advances plans to operationalise the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Kenya-AIST), with research, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure emerging as key areas of cooperation.

ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary John Tanui said strategic partnerships should extend beyond individual projects to create long-term platforms for innovation, knowledge exchange and economic transformation.

Tanui made the remarks after meeting Korea Exim Bank (KEXIM) Country Director Byunghyun Hwang to review progress towards operationalising Kenya-AIST. He said the institution will be critical in strengthening Kenya’s research capacity, developing scientific talent and advancing technological capabilities needed for a knowledge-driven economy.

Discussions also focused on the next phase of collaboration at Konza Technopolis, including proposed Digital Media City and AI data centre initiatives. The projects are expected to strengthen Kenya’s digital infrastructure, create opportunities for innovation and enhance the country’s position as a regional hub for emerging technologies.

A Korean delegation is expected in Kenya in August for further discussions on ICT, cultural exchange and policy cooperation.

Tanui said continued partnerships combining investment, technology transfer and institutional development will be essential to advancing Kenya’s Digital Superhighway agenda.
