Kenya Secures $9.5 Million GCF Support to Strengthen Water Security and Climate Resilience
Kenya has received support from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to enhance water security and build climate resilience in the Upper Athi River Catchment, government officials announced on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit.
Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ng’eno, CBS, who joined President William Ruto in a high-level meeting with Mafalda Duarte, Executive Director of the GCF, said the $9.5 million grant is being implemented through the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya’s accredited national entity to the fund.
“Through NEMA and in collaboration with the Nairobi Rivers Commission, the project is advancing initiatives to strengthen water security, mitigate climate change impacts, and improve livelihoods in the Upper Athi River Catchment,” Dr. Ng’eno said.
The initiative emphasizes Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and strategic infrastructure development to expand access to water and enhance climate resilience for communities across the catchment.
Officials say the partnership demonstrates Kenya’s ongoing commitment to climate action, sustainable water management, and safeguarding vulnerable populations from the growing impacts of climate change.
