Kenya Taps Global Partnership to Unlock Funding for Ocean Protection

Kenya is positioning itself to attract new global financing for ocean protection and sustainable livelihoods following fresh talks between the government and Conservation International (CI).

The meeting, led by Blue Economy Principal Secretary Betsy Njagi, CBS, explored how Kenya can tap into international funding streams for climate resilience, carbon markets, and biodiversity protection, while expanding opportunities for communities that depend on the ocean.

At the centre of the discussions was the need to turn conservation into a source of income and long-term growth, especially for coastal regions facing the effects of climate change and overfishing.

To fast-track progress, the two sides agreed to set up a joint technical working group that will design and oversee key projects, alongside regular strategy meetings to track progress.

“This partnership is about turning our ocean resources into real economic value without destroying them,” Njagi said.

Kenya also extended an invitation to Conservation International to take part in the 11th Our Ocean Conference in June 2026, which the country will host. The forum is expected to open doors for investment, innovation, and international partnerships in marine conservation.

Government officials say the collaboration signals Kenya’s commitment to balancing environmental protection with economic growth, making the Blue Economy a pillar of sustainable development.
