KETRACO energizes Isinya–Konza Line to power technopolis

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 14 – Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has energized the 400kV Isinya–Konza Transmission Line and the 400/132/66kV Konza Substation, strengthening grid reliability and securing electricity supply for Konza Technopolis and the wider lower eastern region.
The newly commissioned infrastructure is expected to support the growth of Kenya’s flagship smart city while enhancing the stability and resilience of the national transmission network.
The project comprises a 98-kilometre double-circuit 400kV transmission line connecting Isinya and Konza, alongside a modern 400/132/66kV substation fitted with two 400/132kV, 350MVA transformers and two 132/66kV, 100MVA transformers.
According to KETRACO, the investment will improve power transfer capacity, strengthen network stability and provide greater operational flexibility within the national grid.
KETRACO Acting Managing Director Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias said the energization marks a major milestone in Kenya’s efforts to build a resilient transmission system capable of meeting growing electricity demand.
“The successful energization of the Isinya–Konza Transmission Line and Konza Substation strengthens the reliability of the national grid and guarantees quality power supply to Konza Technopolis and surrounding areas,” said Kibias.
He noted that the project will play a critical role in supporting industrialization, attracting investments and advancing the country’s Vision 2030 development agenda.
Kibias added that the infrastructure will facilitate electricity evacuation and distribution across the lower eastern region while improving grid resilience through enhanced interconnectivity and alternative power supply routes.
“KETRACO remains committed to developing and maintaining a robust transmission system that supports economic growth, regional integration and universal access to reliable electricity,” he said.
The commissioning comes as demand for reliable electricity continues to grow, driven by industrial expansion, urbanization and the development of strategic projects such as Konza Technopolis.
The project is expected to provide the power capacity required to support emerging industrial, commercial and residential developments in the region while reinforcing Kenya’s broader energy infrastructure.
