The upgrading and equipping of the Maternal and Newborn Ward at Kibugua Level 3 Hospital in Tharaka-Nithi County is nearing completion, with only minor finishing works remaining.
The project is expected to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare services in the area by providing mothers and their babies with improved access to safe and quality care closer to their homes.
According to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, tfe modern facility replaces an ageing maternity unit that had faced challenges including overcrowding and inadequate facilities, limiting the hospital’s capacity to provide quality maternal and newborn services.
The upgraded ward features improved infrastructure and equipment designed to provide a safer, more dignified environment for mothers and newborns.
The project comes as the health sector advances priorities discussed at the ongoing Health Summit, including implementation of the Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere (EWENE) initiative.
EWENE seeks to bring quality maternal and newborn healthcare services closer to communities while supporting efforts to reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths.
The investment is also expected to strengthen primary healthcare delivery in Tharaka-Nithi County and improve the overall experience of women seeking maternity services.
The project further aligns with the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration’s mandate to promote safe and stable communities.
Officials noted that strong primary healthcare remains critical to public well-being, social stability and sustainable national development.
