Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has described Taifa Care as Kenya’s most ambitious Universal Health Care programme since independence, highlighting progress in expanding healthcare coverage and strengthening the health
Addressing attendees at Kenya Health Summit 2026, which was organized at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Kindiki said the Taifa Care programme is rooted in five areas: the human beings themselves, trained healthcare workers, proper legal environment, state, of, the, art diagnostic equipment, and sufficient medicine supply and logistics.
He noted that about 32 million people which equate to almost 60% of the population have been registered under the Taifa Care program, said the Deputy President at KICC.
Kindiki said that there are currently 107, 000 Community Health Volunteers 24 000 medical trainees, and 282 medical registrars working for the realization of the programme together with the Government which plans to add 5, 000 nurses and midwives to the existing cadre.
As part of the National Equipment Support Programme, Level 4 and 5 hospital facilities have been outfitted with diagnostic equipment through a Sh9. 8 billion investment.
He highlighted reforms at KEMSA, and the setting up of a National Ambulance Dispatch Centre, and the launch of the 922 ambulance hotline number as examples of changes in healthcare delivery.
Kindiki said digitisation through the Digital Health Agency will improve efficiency, combat fraudulent claims and strengthen accountability across the healthcare system.
Kindiki remarked that digitization under the Digital Health Agency will reduce time required for services, fight fraudulent health coverage claims and bring together accountability across all the healthcare stakeholders.
