Motorists Warned as Govt Launches Crackdown on Fake Motor Insurance Certificates

The government has launched a joint enforcement operation to curb car insurance fraud.
The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), working alongside the Insurance Fraud Investigation Unit (IFIU), said the crackdown targets fraudulent insurance covers that it warned can endanger motorists and other road users.
In a statement on Wednesday, June 17, the IRA said fake certificates can expose vehicle owners to serious financial and legal consequences, particularly when road accidents occur and insurers refuse to honour claims.
“Fake motor insurance certificates put everyone at risk. That’s why the Insurance Regulatory Authority and the Insurance Fraud Investigation Unit (IFIU) are conducting a joint enforcement and awareness drive across key highways,” IRA stated.
As part of the operation, IRA officials have engaged motorists, matatu owners, SACCOs, and traffic police officers to identify fraudulent insurance covers and to educate the public on how to verify whether policies are genuine.
The authority said the first round of the crackdown took place along major highways and in towns across Machakos, Kitui, and Garissa counties.
IRA noted that many motorists unknowingly buy fake certificates from fraudsters who pose as legitimate agents, only to discover the fraud after accidents.
The crackdown comes as insurance fraud concerns continue to grow, with the government working to ensure every vehicle on the roads carries valid insurance coverage.
The IRA urged motorists to remain alert and confirm the authenticity of their policies, advising them to obtain cover only from licensed insurers.
Authorities have urged motorists to check the authenticity of their motor insurance certificates by dialing *352#. Taking this quick step helps drivers avoid buying fake coverage from unauthorized agents and brokers.
