Murkomen Fires Back at Gachagua Over ‘Vision 2060 Leak’ Claims
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen dismissed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s claim that informers inside government leaked details of President William Ruto’s planned launch of Vision 2060.
Murkomen, who attended Sunday service with Ruto at ACK St Stephen’s Chepkoilel in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, said the allegations were false and misleading. He accused Gachagua of spreading rumours and trying to present himself as someone with access to confidential government information.
“Nilikuwa naona juzi mtu anasimama tu anaanza kusema ati ooh ‘Rais ataeenda kuzindua Vision 2060 nimeambiwa na NIS, nimeambiwa na DCI’ na ni uwongo tupu,” Murkomen said.
Murkomen added that Ruto posted the announcement on his Facebook page early on the morning of July 27, before the report went public. He said Gachagua’s claims aimed to make people believe that Gachagua has a network of informers within the security establishment.
“We were brought in by Anyang’ Nyong’o and the team. That morning on the 27th, before even unveiling this report, your excellency, you had already posted on your Facebook very early in the morning that you are going to speak about the future of Kenya. Now someone wants to posture around and lie to the people of Kenya who may not have had prior information, to say that he has very special information just because he wants to appear as if he is running some clandestine security sector,” Murkomen said.
The Interior CS criticized Gachagua’s comments about the country’s security agencies, saying a former deputy president should not turn national security into a political issue.
“This is the first time in the history of Kenya since 1963 that we have had the most irresponsible leader who has occupied the highest office in the land,” Murkomen added.
His remarks follow Gachagua’s allegation that staff inside State House regularly share confidential information with him about President Ruto’s plans. Gachagua said he received details of the president’s planned address hours before it was delivered on Thursday.
Gachagua claimed that people who work inside government warned him that Ruto would use the speech to distract Kenyans from the country’s problems by unveiling a long-term development agenda. He said the original plan focused on a “Vision 2060,” but officials later shifted it to a “post-2030 vision,” adding that the change did not affect the substance of what the President intended to announce.
“On Thursday morning, I got information from my sources. I have many sources. I was in government for many years. Many people are quite concerned about what is happening in the country, especially the civil service. They are patriotic men and women who feel terrible when the country is going down at a high speed, and they’ve taken it upon themselves to alert me when there’s danger,” Gachagua said.
“I want to thank the informants. I’ve asked civil servants, police, National Intelligence Service, people working in parastatals to preserve my credibility because it’s good for this country so that I retain my relevance and people can continue believing in me.”
He also claimed the information he received came directly from State House, saying many government employees expressed dissatisfaction.
“It came from his office, right inside State House. People are very dissatisfied,” he claimed.
“There’s a lot of dissatisfaction around the President. People working in the Presidential Delivery Service are complaining. The President is too busy to know what’s going on. He’s not busy working for the country but for himself.”
