New Details Emerge in Dr Job Obwaka Death as Wangari Held for 10 Days

A court in Kibera has ordered Beatrice Wangari to remain in custody for 10 days as detectives investigate the sudden death of veteran gynecologist and former Nairobi Hospital director Dr. Job Obwaka. In a ruling delivered on Monday, Deputy Registrar Barbara Alice Akinyi authorized the police to hold Wangari at the Kilimani Police Station, though she reduced the prosecution’s initial request for a 14-day detention.
The court established a clear timeline for the ongoing probe into the veteran medic’s final hours.
“The State is granted 10 working days to complete investigations. The respondent shall remain in custody during this period,” Akinyi ruled.
Prosecutor Samson Ng’etich argued that keeping Wangari in custody is necessary not only for the integrity of the investigation but also for her own protection. He pointed to the intense public scrutiny and emotional weight surrounding the doctor’s death, suggesting that her release could invite unnecessary danger.
“This matter has generated significant public interest and emotions. Releasing the respondent now may place her safety at risk,” Ng’etich submitted.
Dr. Obwaka reportedly collapsed on Friday evening while in Kitengela and was pronounced dead on arrival at The Nairobi Hospital. Wangari, identified as a business associate who was with the doctor at the time, is currently being treated as a person of interest as authorities await post-mortem results to determine the exact cause of death.
Detectives have scheduled a postmortem examination for Tuesday, May 5, which they consider a vital step in uncovering the exact cause of the 83-year-old medic’s death. As part of the broader forensic investigation, police have seized several items from Beatrice Wangari’s home, including utensils, drinkware, and various substances, which are currently undergoing analysis at the government chemist.
Authorities arrested Wangari on the night of May 1, 2026, at Nairobi Hospital, moments after she arrived with the unconscious gynecologist. Detectives have placed her at the center of the investigation, as she was the last person seen with Dr. Obwaka before his condition turned fatal.
Court documents reveal that the two had shared a meal of rice and meat at Wangari’s Kitengela residence earlier that day. Shortly after eating, the doctor reportedly complained of breathing difficulties and became drowsy after taking a few sips of water.
Wangari told investigators that she immediately raised the alarm and sought help from a neighbor after finding the doctor unresponsive. Although emergency responders attempted to revive him, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Prosecutors now maintain that the results of both the autopsy and the forensic tests will dictate the next steps in this high-profile case.
