Pwani Students Participate in Safaricom, Sprite ‘Hook’d on Fresh’ Masterclass

Pwani University students have received a major boost in digital skills and online entrepreneurship after Safaricom, in partnership with Sprite, hosted the “Hook’d on Fresh” masterclass aimed at preparing young people for opportunities in the creator economy.
The session brought together more than 500 students and featured leading digital creators and industry experts who guided participants on how to transform everyday smartphone use into income-generating content. The training focused on social media branding, audience engagement, and monetization strategies in the fast-growing digital space.
For many students, the masterclass marked a shift in mindset, as they began to view content creation as a viable career path rather than just a form of entertainment.
“I used to create content just for fun, but I have now learned that I can actually earn from it,” said Alfred Fondo, a Computer Science student at Pwani University. “This session has opened my mind to new possibilities of becoming financially independent through digital platforms.”
He further noted that affordable connectivity solutions introduced during the programme would help students stay active online and consistently produce content.
The training also placed strong emphasis on financial literacy, with students being guided on how to manage, save, and invest income generated from digital platforms to ensure long-term financial stability.
Industry professionals including Tileh Pacbro, Rono, Juma Shibe, and Vallery shared practical experiences on building successful digital brands, offering insights into trends, consistency, and audience growth.
Safaricom’s Wealth Management representative Phelister Wanjiru also introduced the Ziidi Money Market Fund, encouraging students to adopt smart saving habits as part of their financial journey beyond campus life.
Organizers said the initiative is part of a broader effort to equip young Kenyans with both technical and financial skills needed to thrive in the evolving digital economy.
The “Hook’d on Fresh” campaign continues to roll out across Kenyan universities, with previous editions held at Africa Nazarene University, the University of Eldoret, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, reaching hundreds of students nationwide.
Safaricom and Sprite emphasized that the programme is designed to bridge the gap between creativity and income, positioning young people to take advantage of opportunities in the digital content economy.
