Ruto Unveils Justice Njoki Ndung’u for ICC Judge Bid
The announcement was made during a ceremony at State House, Nairobi, where President Ruto described Justice Ndung’u as “an accomplished legal mind” with the experience and integrity needed to serve on the global judicial stage.
“Her distinguished record in constitutional law, human rights, and judicial service makes her exceptionally qualified for this role,” Ruto said.
Justice Ndung’u, who has served at Kenya’s Supreme Court since 2011, said she was honoured by the nomination and pledged to uphold fairness and accountability if elected.
“I am deeply honoured by the trust Kenya has placed in me,” she said. “I will remain committed to justice, impartiality, and the rule of law.”
Her candidature is seen as a significant moment for Kenya’s judiciary and Africa’s representation in international legal institutions. The ICC, based in The Hague, prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression.
Legal analysts say her extensive background in constitutional reform, gender rights advocacy, and judicial leadership could strengthen Kenya’s campaign ahead of the ICC elections scheduled for 2026.
Justice Ndung’u previously served as a nominated Member of Parliament and played a key role in championing the Sexual Offences Act in Kenya.
