Senator Cherargei Targets Uhuru Kenyatta Retirement Benefits in Senate Motion

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei is turning up the heat on the former administration by filing a formal motion in the Senate to slash or outright scrap the retirement benefits of former President Uhuru Kenyatta. This legislative push aims to give Parliament the power to revoke, reallocate, or modify the substantial budget currently set aside for the retired head of state’s perks.
The senator argues that these public funds belong elsewhere, suggesting a total redistribution of the former president’s package.
According to the motion, “The House recommends that any funds recovered from benefits previously accorded to the retired President shall be redirected to serve the interests and welfare of the people of Kenya.”
This aggressive maneuver follows a wave of targeted criticism from President William Ruto’s inner circle, who have frequently slammed Kenyatta for his continued involvement in the political arena.
Beyond the immediate funding cuts, Senator Cherargei is calling for a deep dive into the former president’s accounts. His motion demands that the auditor general scrutinize every public resource allocated to Uhuru Kenyatta since his retirement and deliver a comprehensive report to Parliament within a strict 60-day window.
The senator intends to use these findings as a roadmap for legislative action, ensuring any financial rollbacks rest on an official paper trail. As the motion details:
“…the House recommends the revocation, variation, or reallocation of budgetary provisions relating to the benefits of the retired President, in line with the findings of the audit and subject to approval in accordance with the law.”
