Sifuna to Ruto: You Used Slogans to Win, We’ll Use Them to Oust You

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna hit back at President William Ruto after the Head of State criticized the opposition for relying on political slogans rather than presenting a clear agenda.

Addressing aspirants at Ufungamano House on Tuesday, August 25, 2026,, Sifuna reminded the president that his own political journey to State House was propelled by slogans and political narratives. He pointed to Ruto’s “Hustler versus Dynasty” narrative, noting that the president successfully used political slogans to build support and capture power, the exact same strategy the opposition plans to use.

“I heard Ruto saying that the bar has been raised. When did the bar rise, and by who? Ruto too rode on slogans to be where he is. We will also use the same slogans to remove him from office,” Sifuna told the gathering.

The Nairobi Senator rejected claims that campaign narratives lack substance, arguing that Ruto’s own rise demonstrated how political messaging can resonate with voters. He signaled that the opposition will continue leveraging popular chants, such as “Ruto Must Go” and “Wantam,” as part of their campaign strategy.

Sifuna maintained that voters fully understand the broader mission of the Linda Mwananchi movement and the opposition beyond political slogans. He added that the president’s criticisms stem from a failure to grasp their policy platform.

‘Do Not Bring Us Slogans’: Ruto Tells 2027 Rivals

Sifuna’s remarks follow recent statements by President Ruto expressing confidence in securing re-election, claiming his prospective challengers lack a solid platform to offer Kenyans. Ruto challenged opposition leaders to move past political slogans and present concrete proposals to transform the country.

The president said Kenyans should evaluate political leaders by the policies and ideas they put forward, not by catchy phrases, as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.

“Do not bring us slogans; come with ideas that will help the nation,” he said.

Ruto added that his administration remains focused on programs that aim to reshape the country and urged politicians to avoid reducing national politics to a battle of slogans.

“We are building a solid nation; we do not want jokes, we do not want games. We want to compete based on ideas on how to transform our nation,” he said.
