Kenya’s sports infrastructure landscape is nearing a major milestone as construction at the 60,000-seat Raila Odinga International Talanta Stadium passes the 94 percent completion mark. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed the development, revealing that the state-of-the-art facility will be operational by November this year.

Speaking during a follow-up inspection tour of the construction site, Mvurya outlined plans to host test matches at the venue before the year ends. The government is pushing to complete the stadium alongside upgrades at Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums to ensure full readiness for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

“We could have opening matches anytime from November to December, and we can play matches even before we host the AFCON. But majorly, we are also focusing on ensuring that we accelerate on all the other auxiliary works that are supposed to be done here,” Mvurya said.

While contractors wrap up primary structural tasks on the main stadium, teams are shifting focus toward completing the project’s two dedicated training grounds, which currently sit at 50 percent and 40 percent completion, respectively.

World-Class Infrastructure Meets CAF Category 4 Standards

As Kenya’s first purpose-built football arena, Talanta Stadium boasts features designed specifically to satisfy strict CAF Category 4 requirements:

  • Spectator & VIP Amenities: The venue features 52 luxury skyboxes alongside high-capacity spectator access systems. Construction crews have already completed 60 of the planned 91 entry turnstiles to optimize crowd flow and security.
  • Media Capabilities: Built to support international broadcasts, the layout integrates a comprehensive media suite complete with press conference rooms, working zones, and a dedicated press tribune.
  • Hybrid Playing Surface: At the centerpiece is a hybrid pitch blending Monaco variety Bermuda grass with stitched synthetic fibers, designed to deliver high durability and optimum TV visual appeal.

Inspection teams from the Confederation of African Football continue to monitor site developments closely as work enters its final phase.

“The latest assessment from CAF has given us positive ratings on our progress and compliance. We continue engaging with CAF on the remaining scope of works to ensure that Kenya attains 100% compliance with the required standards,” Mvurya added.

“We have also strengthened security and spectator-management infrastructure in line with CAF recommendations. Of the 91 turnstiles planned for the facility, 60 have already been completed, along with ongoing work on the skyboxes, media facilities, and other critical installations.”

With turnstiles, media wings, and pitch installations wrapping up on schedule, Kenya remains on track to unveil its premier football cathedral ahead of its continental hosting duties.
