Tobong’u Lore: Showcasing Turkana as a Cultural Tourism Hub in Kenya

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), in partnership with the County Government of Turkana and key regional stakeholders, has stepped up efforts to enhance the visitor experience in Northern Kenya.

Ahead of this year’s Tobong’u Lore Festival, set to be unveiled by President William Ruto, KTB CEO June Chepkemei highlighted the immense tourism potential of the region, emphasizing Northern Kenya’s rich cultural heritage as a major draw for both domestic and international visitors.

She noted that cultural events such as the Tobong’u Lore Festival play a crucial role in opening up lesser-visited areas while showcasing Kenya’s diverse traditions.

“KTB continues to reposition Kenya beyond the traditional safari and beach experiences to include culture, gastronomy, sports tourism, and other unique offerings.

Culture is a big part of who we are, and festivals provide a powerful platform to highlight the diversity of our destinations,” said Chepkemei.

She also emphasized Turkana’s global significance, noting that the region is home to fossil discoveries that trace human origins.

“Through partnerships with county governments, KTB ensures that once tourism products are developed locally, we can effectively communicate and market them to potential visitors,” she added.

On connectivity, Chepkemei cited significant progress in opening up previously hard-to-reach areas through improved road infrastructure and the licensing of new airlines.

“We are encouraged by government efforts to improve access nationwide. Projects such as the Lironi–Mau Summit highway will enhance travel across Western and Rift Valley regions, while new airlines continue to boost air connectivity.

Tourism creates a multiplier effect in the economy, supporting small-scale traders and generating thousands of jobs,” she said.

Turkana Tours CEO Ekutan Omar highlighted a steady rise in tourist arrivals to the region, noting Turkana’s growing appeal as a destination of choice.

“We invite visitors to experience the magic of this region. Turkana is safe, accessible by road, and served by regular flights, making travel convenient for domestic and international tourists. Our partnership with KTB has greatly increased the visibility of our attractions,” Omar said.

He encouraged families and adventure seekers to explore Turkana and immerse themselves in its cultural experiences, describing the festival as a true reunion of tradition, featuring lively music, elaborate regalia, and authentic cultural expression.

Now in its 9th edition, Tobong’u Lore — meaning “Welcome Back Home” — is a vibrant annual cultural festival in Turkana County. The event celebrates the heritage of the Turkana people and neighboring communities through music, dance, colourful attire, and cultural exhibitions. It also promotes peace, unity, cultural preservation, and tourism in the region.

In 2024, President William Ruto declared Tobong’u Lore a global cultural event, positioning it to attract international tourists and further cement Turkana’s place on Kenya’s tourism map.
