Why Gachagua Says Kenyans Should Not Worry About Opposition Candidate Yet

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is urging him to run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election, a move that adds significant weight to his expected bid. Speaking on Sunday, May 3, 2026, during a church service in Kajiado, Gachagua addressed the growing buzz surrounding his ambitions and dismissed concerns that his candidacy might split the opposition.
He reassured the public that his personal aspirations align with a broader goal of unity, claiming that coalition leaders remain focused on a shared strategy for the upcoming polls. Gachagua maintained that a crowded field of contenders signifies strength rather than division within the opposition ranks.
“Wanachama wa DCP wamenihimiza kuwania urais mwaka wa 2027, na niko tayari kwa hilo. Hata hivyo, nataka kuwahakikishia Wakenya kuwa azma yangu haitagawanya upinzani; sisi ni wengi na tutaendelea kushirikiana,” Gachagua stated.
Gachagua clarified that the opposition plans to hold extensive consultations to select a single, joint candidate to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration in 2027. He promised that the various factions within the team will protect their alliances and focus on a unified front to ensure a victory against President Ruto.
Gachagua went a step further by pledging his full support to whoever the coalition chooses, even if he is not the one on the ballot.
“Hakikisho yangu ni kwamba zote, tutaketi pamoja, tusikizane tutoe kiongozi moja wa kupambana na William Ruto katika uchaguzi ujao. Iwapo hawataniteu, basi nitamuunga mkono yule atakayetolewa,” Gachagua said.
The former deputy president vowed to make William Ruto a one-term president. During an earlier stop in Kajiado East on Friday, Gachagua directly appealed to the local community to back his bid and help him restore the region’s dignity.
“Nataka watu wa Kajiado mnipatie nafasi niwe rais wa sita wa Jamhuri ya Kenya, niregeshe heshima ya watu wa Kajiado. Nataka niambie wale hawajui. Hii Kajiado ni DCP zone,” Gachagua said.
Elsewhere, Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka reached out to the supporters of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, asking them to back his 2027 presidential run.
During a church service at Nyakongo Seventh-day Adventist Church in Homa Bay County on Saturday, May 2, 2026, Musyoka presented his bid as both a tribute to his late partner and a continuation of their shared political journey. He urged the community to view him as the natural successor to Odinga’s legacy, promising to keep the late leader’s ideals alive in the national conversation.
Kalonzo reflected on their fifteen-year partnership, arguing that his deep familiarity with Odinga’s goals makes him the right person to lead the movement forward. He specifically highlighted their joint stands against corruption and the privatization of public assets as key pillars he intends to uphold.
“I stood by Raila for more than 15 years and know his vision, which includes the fight against corruption and the sale of public assets, besides the Adani deal, on which we had some differences. Now he is gone, and I need to take over from him, and I need your support,” Musyoka said.
